Wearing a motorcycle helmet is the single best piece of protection you can have on the road. It's an unfortunate reality that other drivers don't always pay attention to their surroundings and motorcyclist typically pay the price. Fortunately, the experts at Rommel Harley-Davidson® Delmarva have composed a great little snapshot of the different types and styles of helmets available. Check out these helmets below, then come on down to the dealership in Salisbury, Maryland to try them on yourself

FULL FACE HELMETS

A full face helmet is the largest, heaviest, and most protective type of headgear for motorcycle riders. This type of helmet is defined by the full protective structure that surround the rider's head completely. These helmets come with full face shields that protect your eyes nose and mouth from debris on the road, as well as the hard wind. New full face helmets are often vented to help a rider stay cool, however the heavy design makes a full helmet a bit less comfortable than other types after extended rides, as the weight of the helmet can begin to pull on your neck and cause some discomfort.

HALF HELMETS

A half helmet is the opposite of a full face helmet in terms of design and function. These helmets only cover the top half of a rider's head, providing outstanding ventilation everywhere else. The lightweight design also makes a half helmet a great choice if you're going to have your helmet on for hours at a time. The biggest drawback to this style of helmet is the lack of protection. Not only does a half helmet leave some parts of your head exposed, this type of headgear doesn't typically include any protection for your face. If you're looking at a half helmet model that doesn't have any eye protection, you might want to consider adding a set of riding glasses and a facemask to make your ride a little more comfortable.

OPEN FACE HELMETS

An open face helmet copies the design of a full face helmet, but omits the chin bar and face shield. This creates a pretty awesome combination of comfort, convenience and protection. While not all open face helmets come with any sort of face protection, many come with removable visors that can help give your eyes a break from the sting of the wind while you ride. Open face helmets are also good for extended wear thanks to the lack of a chin bar. Like a half helmet, you can sip water, grab a snack, or just BS with your buddies when you take a break without needing to take the helmet off entirely.

MODULAR HELMETS

A modular helmet is modern take on the full face design. These helmets look like a full face helmet from a distance, but when you get up close you'll notice that the chin bar is jointed to lift above the rider's face. This gives you wind and bug protection equal to a full face helmet, and the comfort and freedom of an open face helmet. The one consideration here is that the chin bar won't protect you from impacts as effectively as a full face helmet, so if you're choosing a modular helmet don't count on the same level of protection in a wreck.

Regardless of style, wearing a properly fitted helmet will dramatically reduce the risk of major head injury in the event of an accident.
